In a recent podcast episode of The World of Internet Marketing, the president of Halyard Consulting Jonathan Goodman, explained how his company uses the SWOT analysis for their Internet clients. His use of the SWOT analysis is a little different than what is commonly seen for financial purposes.

Most business owners and managers understand that the SWOT analysis looks at a company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This analysis often occurs from a financial standpoint, but Goodman uses the same concept when looking at the Internet presence of his clients. Just like with a financial analysis, it measures internal and external factors that can determine whether a business will be a success or failure.

Goodman stated that he first begins his analysis by giving clients a vocabulary list to familiarize them with terms that are standard in the Internet marketing industry but may not be familiar to those outside of it. He provided a sample that included words such as “domain authority” and “root domain.”

The analysis consists of looking at the website and where it currently ranks for domain authority. He also checks out the competition to see where they stand. In addition, he will look to see where the website stands with social media. He mainly looks at Facebook and Twitter to see which URLs did well and what titles spurred the most response. Through this analysis, he can tell what is working and what is lacking as well as what the competition is doing right.

Another aspect of SWOT analysis as it pertains to Internet marketing is linking domains and getting high-quality backlinks. There are generally two strategies with this. A company either strives to obtain one link with high domain authority or attempts to get several links in the mid-range.

The large scale SWOT analysis consists of Halyard Consulting analyzing a company’s top three competitors. Goodman provides a summary detail that shows where the company is currently and where it is going as well as how it compares to the competition. The business also receives some overall observations as well as suggested project objectives to improve its status.

Goodman stated that the analysis most benefits companies making over $ 2 million. He discussed some of the resources that he uses such as the Alexa rankings, which serves as a good analytical tool for analyzing a website. One can also use it to compare the competitions’ sites so a company has a better idea of where it stands and if it needs improvement.

DMTF, ETSI, OASIS, OCEAN, OGF, OW2 and SNIA Announce Cloud Interoperability Week

Standards organizations and open source communities DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force), ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute), OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), the FP7 OCEAN (Open Cloud for Europe, JApan and beyoNd) project, OGF (Open Grid Forum), the OW2 global open source community and SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association) announce today they are joining forces to organize the first Cloud Interoperability Week in Madrid, Spain, and Santa Clara, CA, USA the week of 16-20 September 2013.

The Cloud Interoperability Week will combine workshops, conferences, demonstrations and testing sessions to explore and extend the level of interoperability of different solutions with regards to existing standards, such as OCCI, CDMI, CIMI, OVF, and CAMP. This event continues the series of Cloud Plugfests launched in 2011 by SNIA and OGF and since joined by several other major organizations. The series is dedicated to the promotion of interoperability efforts for cloud standards-based software, services, frameworks, products and projects.

Standardization is the key enabler of interoperable cloud solutions. The Cloud Interoperability Week events will bring together developers and application communities to co-operate on approaches that enable interoperation. Both open source and commercial cloud projects are invited to take part in the workshop and testing sessions of Cloud Interoperability Week. Registration is free and open to any organization, with participation in testing subject to the terms of the participation agreement.

Cloud Interoperability Week will provide a unique insight into the current state of cloud standards implementations and use cases. This event is intended to accelerate the level of interoperability of different solutions and showcase how cloud standards work together.

National EE Week 2013 Highlights How Technology Can Get Kids Outdoors & Learning

National Environmental Education Week starts today the nation’s largest celebration of environmental education and will spotlight ways by which technology can enhance environmental learning.

Environmental education can incorporate all four pillars of STEM. Moreover, 75 percent of 1,900 educators asked in a survey by the National Wildlife Federation said students who spend regular time outdoors tend to be more creative and better problem-solvers. EE Week is providing case studies, webinars, a new Google+ Hangout on weather and the environment for students and educators, as well as other multimedia resources.

In todays era of gadgets and global connectivity, technology offers new ways for classrooms, students and learners of all ages to explore the environment. Tools such as mobile apps for spotting and identifying species in nature and sharing observations help make discoveries possible by citizens as well as scientists.

NEEF released the Tech & Our Planet infographic illustrating the widespread use of technology among kids and adults and possibilities for environmental learning, career pathways and implications for the economy. For example, the growth in cloud computing and related technologies could help save more than a third of the energy used by data centers by the year 2020.
