RIT launches nations first minor in free and open source software and free culture

Rochester, N.Y. (PRWEB) March 07, 2014

Responding to student interest and a growing industry demand for workers with such skills, Rochester Institute of Technology is launching the nations first interdisciplinary minor in free and open source software and free culture.

Starting in Fall 2014, RITs School of Interactive Games and Media will offer the minor in free and open source software (FOSS) and free culture for students who want to develop a deep understanding of the processes, practices, technologies, and financial, legal and societal impacts of the FOSS and free culture movements.

As students progress through the minor, they acquire domain knowledge, hands-on experience and community interaction skills, said Stephen Jacobs, professor of interactive games and media and associate director of RITs Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction and Creativity (MAGIC). Students can use their new skills to become leaders, as well as contributors.

While propriety softwaresuch as Microsoft Officeis developed, controlled and restricted by organizations, free open source softwaresuch as Libre Officegives users the right and ability to freely use, modify and share the software itself. The free culture movement, exemplified by Creative Commons, allows for the same type of flexible use rights for creative works, such as music or graphics. When companies want to take advantage of the opportunities to modify and/or redistribute FOSS software, which is often more reliable, secure and less expensive, they turn to experts in FOSS culture, process and licenses.

Jacobs designed RITs first FOSS course around student-created games for the One Laptop per Child program in 2008. As their software ran on the laptops, Red Hat Inc., a leading provider of open source software solutions, donated 25 XO laptops for student use in the class. Red Hat has continued to collaborate with FOSS programs at RIT, including sponsoring the humanitarian program in Jacobs FOSSBox Lab.

RIT has long been a strong proponent of open source, not just in technology but also in the free sharing of ideas and knowledge, both of which are key factors in Red Hats involvement with RIT, said Tom Callaway, in charge of University Outreach at Red Hat.

RITs FOSS minor, driven by Professor Jacobs, helps address the role that free and open source software plays in todays world. Nearly every form of technology innovation, from gaming consoles to cloud computing, relies on open source code as a fundamental building block. Open source is helping define the way forward for digital society at large, Callaway said.

RITs 15-credit-hour minor, open to undergraduates across the university, includes three core courses from the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts. Students also select two elective courses that can be chosen from a list of computing and liberal arts courses. Electives from additional disciplines will likely be added over time.

Someone who doesnt know how to code can go all the way through this minor, said Jacobs. In required technical classes, students with different skills will work in teams to build a common project.

All students will take a course in which they develop and contribute to an existing humanitarian FOSS project. They will also take a course on theories of free and open source culture and another on the business and legal aspects of open source. Other electives can be selected based on the expertise of the student.

People are using free culture and its social structure to solve a host of problems, said Amit Ray, a professor in the Department of English. It is important for programmers, business people, scientists and even scholars to understand and be a part of free and open source culture.

Red Hat has supported Jacobs FOSS@MAGIC initiative, which promotes the practice of free and open source software development by connecting students to humanitarian projects, independent studies, co-op opportunities, conference registrations and travel, summer undergraduate research fellowships, faculty and staff professional development opportunities and hackathons.

Record Full Year and Fourth Quarter 2012 for Open Source ERP xTuple

Norfolk, Virginia (PRWEB) January 30, 2013

xTuple, fast recognized as the worlds #1 open source ERP, delivered record revenues in 2012 and continued strong overall growth in the fourth quarter, the third successive best quarter ever. Sales for the full year 2012 were up 50% over 2011 with a greater percentage of market-driven sales delivered by the xTuple Partner channel, which itself grew by 33%.

Employment doubled in 2012 to sustain market demand for more nimble open source ERP software. Close to one-third of employees now work outside xTuples Mid-Atlantic headquarters, covering eight U.S. states and Canada.

Embracing its open source roots, xTuple, the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) of any ERP on the market, is also proving itself to be among the easiest to use enterprise technology applications today. This aligns with the companys mission: to help companies of all sizes successfully implement powerful and easy-to-use open source ERP software, to grow their business profitably.

As Mike Atherton, xTuples Director of Training, puts it, ERP is akin to alchemy. Better than mere gold, xTuple turns business aspirations into reality and profits.

Milestones in fourth quarter 2012 include:

Open source innovator Marc OBrien joined the xTuple management team as Vice President of Business Development. OBrien, formerly of Acquia, co-founded OpenProj (now ProjectLibre), the open source alternative to Microsoft Project.

The rapidly growing Value Added Reseller (VAR) Partners were recognized at the annual xTuple Partner Conference (PartnerCon) with awards for exceptional growth and outstanding service.

The landmark and much anticipated release of version 4.0 of the xTuple accounting, CRM and ERP suite came in December 2012 with over 400 new enhancements in the classic Desktop and the first ever Mobile Web client, optimized for a multi-tenant Cloud hosting environment.

xTuple for Wholesale Distribution (xWD) began its soft launch with several new customer implementations in electrical and plumbing distributors, replacing the few remaining software alternatives under-supported by legacy vendors in the industry.

Technology analysts continue to seek out xTuple CEO Ned Lilly to explain how the xTuple product line runs circles around companies literally hundreds of times greater in size.

Were very comfortable playing the role of disruptor in a market that has, frankly, drifted away from product quality and customer satisfaction, said Lilly. Open source allows us to develop a better product and be more responsive to our global community of users customers, partners and even users of the free product. We believe its a better way to do business, and its gratifying to see this continuing affirmation from the market. But we also know that the onus is on us to keep delivering, and we intend to do so. 2013 should be another breakout year for xTuple.

xTuple Supports Innovation

From blueprints to buildouts, xTuple helps foster startups in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic technology corridor between Research Triangle, North Carolina, and Washington D.C. As a committed, passionate member of the Greater Norfolk tech community, xTuple is a financial sponsor as well as mentor at HatchNorfolk.com, an intense accelerator program, and other events where entrepreneurs showcase their ideas.

About xTuple

xTuple business management software gives growing companies control over operations and profitability. xTuple integrates all critical functional areas in one modular system: sales, accounting and operations including customer and supplier management, inventory control, manufacturing and distribution the powerful tools to Grow Your World

OW2 Announces CompatibleOne Open Source Cloud Broker White Paper

Paris, France (PRWEB) May 07, 2012

OW2, the global open source community for open source middleware and generic applications, announced today the publication of the first CompatibleOne white paper. Under the title CompatibleOne Open Source Cloud Broker Architecture Overview, the white paper outlines the four-step functional manifest-to-service provisioning cycle of the CompatibleOne broker, provides an overview of its logical model, introduces its core concepts and describes its communication architecture.

The white paper presents CompatibleOne’s four-step functional manifest-to-service provisioning cycle:

a) The first step addresses users needs and their requirements that are expressed in what is called the Manifest.

b) In the second step, the Manifest is validated for accounting and billing and technical feasibility. The output of the second step is the Provisioning plan which contains information required to achieve the infrastructure described by the user or initiator within the Manifest.

c) The third step is the execution of the Provisioning plan by the core engine of the broker which then generates the Provisioning Control Graph.

d) In the fourth step, guided by the Provisioning Control Graph, the Broker

negotiates with different cloud service providers and engages the resources to be delivered to the user in the form of the Service.

This white paper clearly defines the role of the open source cloud broker in the cloud computing environment comments Jean-Pierre Laisne, Bull Open Source Strategist and leader of the CompatibleOne project, the CompatibleOne team is proud to demonstrate that interoperability and portability of workloads are not an issue anymore and that vendor lock-in can be avoided, he adds.

An open source collaborative project based on open standards, in particular the Open Cloud Computing Interface (OCCI), CompatibleOne provides support for interoperability, portability and reversibility. In CompatibleOne, models and documents are shared by developers and operators, customers and vendors in the form of a Manifest, it is a blueprint for developers, operators and DevOps.

The Most Trusted Open Source Digital Asset Management System Has a New Version Available Now for Download

London, UK (PRWEB) June 15, 2011

Razuna Ltd today announced the release of version 1.4.5 of its flagship product, which is a major upgrade to the worlds most used open source Digital Asset Management System. Having seen major adoption in many worldwide organizations it is both free to download and use. Razuna is based entirely on an open source technology stack and has been downloaded thousands of times since its original release.

Nitai Aventaggiato, Founder of Razuna Ltd says – Razuna 1.4.5 brings low cost digital asset management to every organization, and dramatically reduces the barrier to organize and collaborate on your media library, be it video, audio, images, or documents.

Our customers already enjoy the benefit of managing and accessing all of their digital asset management requirements with Razuna. With Razuna 1.4.5 weve made it even easier to collaborate with your clients and customers on projects.

This release continues to build on Razunas history of delivering low-cost, innovative and Enterprise enabled Digital Asset Management solutions. Here are, but a few, new features available in the Razuna 1.4.5 release:

Widgets – Share and collaborate on your assets with the ease. Widgets allow you to publish, share and collaborate on any given folder or collection on any site by simply embedding a widget. This allows assets to be available outside of Razuna. Assets can also be displayed with either a thumbnail view or slideshow.

Browsing Subfolders – In line with the release of Widgets, we have also enabled browsing through subfolders in the general folder view, shared folders and within a widget. This permits users to drill into all available shared folders via collections or widgets.

Single Asset View – allows you to combine all assets into a single view, for convenience. Based on feedback from our customers, as more and organizations continued to move to Razuna, the need for a unified view was raised. For instance, you may have different versions of your assets deployed on You Tube, Vimeo, Flickr and SoundCloud or simply want to upload already converted assets to Razuna. Previously this could only be achieved by creating new asset records. By using the new Additional Versions functionality one can simply point an existing asset, either on the net or upload into Razuna. The combined, single or unified view will display not only the original asset, but all its different converted formats and version.

Performance Enhancements – Razunas codebase and Javascript libraries have undergone a complete rewrite. As a result our users will experience a tremendous performance boost, thus allowing customers to find and serve digital assets more quickly and conveniently.

Razuna is available at http://razuna.org. Customers have options to use our preconfigured Razuna Virtual Server, download the dedicated Razuna Standalone Server or a deploy to a J2EE-Server with the Razuna WAR/EAR distribution.
