Halyard Consulting Discusses the Amazon Fire and Risks of Showrooming

In this week’s podcast of The World of Internet Marketing, Jonathan Goodman, president of Halyard Consulting, spoke about Amazons new smartphone the Amazon Fire. He specifically focused on one feature that is part of the Fire, the Firefly, and its impact on small retail businesses.

The Amazon Fire has just been released and one of the features it touts is Firefly. It allows you to take photos of various items, from business cards to billboards to products, and access information about that item on your phone in just seconds.

Goodman stated that with Firefly you can save items to your Wish List on Amazon or order the product from Amazon right from your phone. He believes that people using the Fire will take business away from the Mom and Pop stores and that those stores will start to look more like museums where people go to visit and see what is in the marketplace but ultimately purchase through Amazon.

Goodman went on to say that Amazon can afford to sell lower than the competition because of its size. As a multi-billion dollar company, it has the advantage over small businesses that are just trying to survive. He sees the phone as another way for Amazon to monopolize the retail industry. This phone could not only effect small retailers but large box stores like Walmart.

Another feature of the Fire that Goodman was concerned with was the photo storage in Amazon Cloud. While it provides convenience for the users it also benefits Amazon. Amazon will have access to the photos allowing their system to understand a person’s location, interests, and connections.

Amazon Fire was released June 18th and is exclusive with AT&T. It includes a full year of Prime and comes in either 32GB or 64GB. It is the first smartphone from Amazon, but it joins a list of other electronic products, including Kindle and Kindle Fire. It remains to be seen how the new Fire will fare in today’s market.
